Kasigau

The day started with breakfast, as normally, at around 7:00. The bus leaved from the research station maybe at 8 o’clock and we drove about 2 hours to the destination. On the way we drove through this huge field in which they grow plant called sisal. The road was a bit bumpy and the bus had to drive slowly so we fell a bit behind our schedule. Nonetheless the small speed helped us to see animals such as zebras, giraffes, antelopes and baboons on the way to Kasigau.

The long hiking up the mountain started. We climbed three hours and 900 meters straight up, but although several brakes was taken place. We also noticed how important it is to take care of getting enough salts and water after sweating a lot. Some of the students had to turn back after feeling weak and dizzy. Some parts of the route was very steep and the big amount of water and snacks in our back bag raised the pulse very high. The views were amazing and proud feeling when seeing the starting point far down was absolutely deserved.

After an hour we started to hike back down which was noticeably easier. Climbing downhill is quite different. You have to focus on totally other things. The ground can be slippery and muscle groups which are used are different. You also have to be careful not to go too fast and break ankles or to have a crash with a tree.

Well, I think that was that. After the hike the sun had fallen down and we returned to the Taita Research Station with empty stomachs. DINNER!
